Beothuk Books

The Beothuk were the native peoples of Newfoundland. They used red ochre extensively, on their hair, their skin, their tools and possessions, so became known as 'Red Indians' or 'redskins'.

Because they never grasped the European concept of private property, French officials distributed arms and placed bounties on their scalps. The British shot them on sight.

The last known Beothuk, Shanawdithit (Nancy April), died of tuberculosis in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1829.

Beothuk Books is dedicated to the memory of the Beothuk and the peoples, cultures, languages and tribes which have been wiped off the earth, or are now under threat today. May intolerance, torture and genocide cease. May peoples of the world live together in peace.
