Carla Toney, B.A., M.A., was born in Eagle Rock, California in 1946. She studied English literature at the University of California at Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.) and California State University at Long Beach.

Her work has appeared in Come Together (1980), Back Rubs (1996), WiPlash (Women in Publishing), Dakini, Big Mouth, The Likes of Us and newspapers in the United Kingdom and United States.

Runner-up in poetry in the 1992 London Writer's Competition (Wandsworth), Sebastian Barker, former President of the London Poetry Society, described her poetry as '...original, mature and hauntingly beautiful.'

After the Burning, her first collection of poetry, has been acclaimed by Annie Lennox ('...beautiful, mystical and humane'), Wendy Wallace ('Carla Toney is one of the most original and sensitive poets writing today') and Denise Linn ('Carla Toney's poetry is sensuous, lyrical and empowering. It calls down thunder from the heavens to feed the soul').

Carla Toney worked extensively in both academic and trade publishing and taught Creative Writing at Hackney Community College in London. She now teaches English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English literature at the University of Cooperative Education and a Volkshochschule in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She is also an experienced editor.

Carla Toney's grandfather, Elmer Wiley Toney, was American Indian. She is a regular contributor to the website All Things Cherokee.
